“German has class, German has style and romance and feeling.” A Yugoslavian woman quietly repeats the teacher’s words. Neon lights dazzle the classroom, as if to confirm that it is evening. The adults become pupils here, they sit on the small chairs that belong to the children from the grammar school during the day. The children smile at the photos on the wall. A Polish girl whispers to herself in German and looks anxiously at the teacher. The languages of the individual pupils are transformed into German here, and their halting, accented speech tells their stories and feelings.
